Lane Cove West to the Sydney CBD is one of the fastest and most-run apartment lanes we handle. Young professionals moving in for a shorter commute. Downsizers coming into the CBD from a family suburb. Renters relocating between mid-rise buildings on either side of the Lane Cove Tunnel. The whole move usually runs in half a day once the two lift bookings are aligned — here’s how it plays out.

The short version

Distance: roughly 8km, most of it in the Lane Cove Tunnel and on the Warringah Freeway. Drive time: 15–25 minutes off-peak; 30–40 minutes in weekday peak windows. Typical cost: $600–$900 + GST for a 2-bed apartment on our 2-mover crew ($150/hr). Total time on the clock: 4–6 hours for a 2-bed, mostly on the two lift-booked load windows. Biggest variable: whether both lift bookings line up. The drive is short — the cost lives in the load-out and load-in windows.

Both ends are apartment moves — the lifts are the whole game

Both Lane Cove West and the Sydney CBD are dominated by mid-rise to high-rise residential buildings with service lifts, loading docks and strata rules. The kerbside carry — usually the biggest variable on a suburban move — barely exists here. What matters is the lift booking, and there are two of them.

Lane Cove West side

Lane Cove West’s apartment stock clusters along Epping Road — Aria, Bluewater, the Verse buildings, Meridien, and the newer complexes built since 2010. Every one requires:

  • A booked service-lift window through building management (usually a 3- or 4-hour block)
  • A refundable move-out bond ($200–$400)
  • A Certificate of Currency for the removalist’s insurance
  • 1–2 weeks minimum notice

Lane Cove West lift windows are generally more flexible than CBD or Chatswood equivalents — 2 weeks notice is usually enough for a mid-week morning slot.

CBD side

Sydney CBD residential towers are stricter. Expect:

  • 2–3 weeks minimum notice for a lift booking (longer for the Barangaroo residential towers)
  • Certificate of Currency requirements sent through a formal building-manager email process
  • Dock-only truck access (no kerbside on Kent, Sussex or Pitt Streets during business hours)
  • A designated 3- or 4-hour move-in window matched to the dock booking

The key to a smooth Lane Cove West → CBD move is aligning both windows. If your Lane Cove West window is 9am–12pm and your CBD window is 11am–2pm, that’s a good overlap — the truck drives at 11:30am (off-peak) and arrives with load-in time in hand. If they’re 9am–12pm and 3pm–6pm, you’re paying for the crew waiting between the two ends. We aim for a 30-minute overlap between the two windows.

The drive: Lane Cove Tunnel or Epping Road?

The default is the Lane Cove Tunnel — it’s a straight shot from Lane Cove West to the Warringah Freeway, and it bypasses Epping Road’s peak-hour congestion completely. From the tunnel exit at Artarmon, the truck runs the Freeway to the Harbour Bridge and into the CBD.

Off-peak drive time: 15–25 minutes to the CBD core or Barangaroo.

Peak windows to plan around:

  • Weekday 7am–9am eastbound: Lane Cove Tunnel entry queues up. Adds 10–15 minutes.
  • Weekday 4:30pm–6pm westbound: Return leg for the crew. Same delay.
  • Weekday 8am–9:30am Harbour Bridge southbound: Add 10 minutes onto the CBD side of the drive.

Epping Road (the non-tunnel alternative) is almost never faster for a truck. It’s a slower road with more traffic lights and no bypass of the Lane Cove commercial precinct. The tunnel toll is worth it every time.

What the move actually looks like on the day

Here’s a typical Lane Cove West → CBD move — 2-bed apartments at both ends, 2-mover crew, both lift bookings aligned.

8:45am: Crew arrives at Lane Cove West building 15 minutes before the 9am lift window. Check in with building manager, present certificate of currency, receive service-lift key. Lay floor runners in lobby, corridor and lift.

9:00am–11:00am: Load-out. Two movers cycle apartment-to-lift-to-truck. A 2-bed with lift access typically loads in 1.5–2 hours. Furniture blanket-wrapped and strapped in the truck as it goes on.

11:00am–11:30am: Truck drives Lane Cove West → CBD via the tunnel. Off-peak this is 15–20 minutes. Crew grabs lunch during the drive.

11:30am–1:30pm: Load-in at CBD building. Truck reverses into loading dock. Crew brings load up via pre-booked service lift. Furniture positioned per your instructions.

1:30pm–2:00pm: Final walkthrough. Return lift keys. Sign-off and payment.

Total on the clock: 4.5–5 hours at $150/hr + GST = $675–$750 + GST for a 2-bed with no complications.

Three things that push the cost up on this route

1. Misaligned lift bookings.

The single biggest variable. If the Lane Cove West window closes at noon and the CBD window doesn’t open until 3pm, that’s three hours of the crew waiting. Book them to overlap by 30 minutes.

2. Peak-hour drives.

A load-out that ends at 4pm and drives through afternoon peak adds 20–30 minutes on the road, both directions. Mid-morning or early afternoon starts save real money.

3. CBD dock queues.

CBD residential towers occasionally have another move booked in the same dock window. Building managers usually flag this at booking, but if there’s overlap, we may stage on Kent or Sussex Street until the dock clears.

What we bring

Every Lane Cove West → CBD move includes:

  • Floor runners at both buildings’ lobbies and corridors
  • Full blanket-wrap on all furniture
  • Dollies and moving straps sized to the buildings’ service lifts
  • Public liability and goods-in-transit insurance (certificate of currency to both buildings in advance)
  • A crew in Hartmann uniform with photo ID
  • Written quote before the day

The verdict

Lane Cove West → CBD is a well-behaved half-day apartment move. The drive is short, the tunnel is reliable, and both ends have modern loading infrastructure. Get the two lift windows to overlap by 30 minutes and the move flows in 4–6 hours for a 2-bedroom.

FAQ

Quick answers.

How much does it cost to move from Lane Cove West to Sydney CBD in 2026?

For a 1-bed apartment with lift access at both ends, expect $450–$600 + GST at $150/hr with two movers, based on 3–4 typical hours. A 2-bed apartment is $600–$900 + GST (4–6 hours). The distance is short — about 8km via the Lane Cove Tunnel — so most of the clock time is on the two lift-booked load windows, not the drive.

How long does the drive from Lane Cove West to Sydney CBD take?

Off-peak, 15–25 minutes via the Lane Cove Tunnel and Harbour Bridge. Weekday 7am–9am eastbound peak adds 10–15 minutes at the tunnel entry; 4:30pm–6pm westbound peak adds the same on the return leg. Mid-morning (10am–2pm) is the cleanest drive window for a moving truck.

Do we go through the Lane Cove Tunnel?

Yes — it's the default and fastest route. The Lane Cove Tunnel entry is at the eastern edge of Lane Cove West, and it bypasses Epping Road congestion completely. The tunnel exits at Artarmon, then Warringah Freeway carries the truck to the Harbour Bridge and into the CBD. Total distance from Lane Cove West to Barangaroo or the CBD core is about 8km.

Do I need to book a service lift in the Lane Cove West building?

Yes, in almost every case. The mid-rise apartment buildings along Epping Road — Aria, Bluewater, the Verse buildings, Meridien — all require a booked service-lift window through building management, usually 1–2 weeks notice. Some also want a refundable move-out bond and a Certificate of Currency for our insurance. Send us the booking date on the quote call.

Do I need to book a lift in the CBD building?

Almost certainly yes. Sydney CBD residential towers — the buildings along Kent Street, Sussex Street, Bathurst Street and the Barangaroo residential precinct — all require pre-booked service-lift windows plus building-manager sign-off on the removalist's certificate of currency. CBD lift bookings usually want 2–3 weeks notice.

Where can the truck park in the CBD?

In the destination building's designated loading dock. Most CBD residential towers have basement or ground-level loading docks accessed off the tower's dedicated service entrance. Kerbside truck parking on the CBD grid — Kent Street, Sussex Street, Pitt Street — is generally not available during business hours, and the CBD parking clearways make it impractical anyway. Building management assigns your dock window when you book the lift.

What day and time is best for a Lane Cove West to CBD move?

Weekday mid-morning is the cleanest window — 10am start, both lifts booked in an overlapping window, drive at 10:30am (off-peak), unload 11am–1pm. Avoid Monday morning (heavy commuter peak into the CBD) and Friday afternoon (both peaks converge). Saturday mornings before 10am also work well for the drive but CBD building manager availability can be limited on weekends.
