Chatswood to Barangaroo is one of the most common apartment-to-apartment lanes we run. Growing professionals downsizing into a Barangaroo penthouse. Returning expats moving out of a Chatswood tower to a harbourside apartment. Empty-nesters coming south from a bigger Chatswood place into a smaller CBD footprint. If you’re doing this move — or thinking about it — here’s what actually happens on the day.
The short version
Total distance: roughly 11km, most of it on the Warringah Freeway and Harbour Bridge. Drive time: 25–35 minutes off-peak; 45–55 minutes in weekday peak windows. Typical cost: $600–$900 + GST for a 2-bed apartment with two movers on our $150/hr rate. Total time on the clock: 4–6 hours for a 2-bed, most of it spent on lift-booked load-outs and load-ins rather than driving. Biggest variable: whether both lift bookings line up. Get that right and the move flows; get it wrong and you’re paying for hours the crew spends waiting.
The two ends are both tower moves — plan the lifts first
Both Chatswood and Barangaroo are high-rise strata precincts, and the number-one determinant of how long this move takes is whether the two lift bookings align. Here’s how each end works.
Chatswood side
Chatswood 2067 is dense with residential towers — Atrium, Metro Residences, the Concerto, Era, The Landmark, and the Meriton buildings on Archer, Victoria and Railway. Every one requires:
- A booked service-lift window through building management (usually a 3-hour block)
- A refundable move-out bond ($200–$500)
- A Certificate of Currency for the removalist’s public liability and goods-in-transit insurance
- 2–3 weeks minimum notice
Chatswood lift windows tend to be flexible on weekday mornings (10am–1pm slots are usually available at 2 weeks notice) but tight on weekends (book 4 weeks out for a Saturday morning window).
Barangaroo side
Barangaroo’s residential towers — One Sydney Harbour, Anadara, Alexander, Watermark — are newer and stricter. Expect:
- 3–4 weeks minimum notice for a lift booking
- Certificate of Currency requirements sent through a formal building-manager email chain
- Dock-only truck access (no kerbside on Hickson Road or Barangaroo Avenue)
- A designated 3- or 4-hour move-in window, matched to the dock booking
The trick with a Chatswood → Barangaroo move is aligning both windows. If your Chatswood window is 10am–1pm and your Barangaroo window is 12pm–3pm, that’s a good match — the truck drives at 11:30am (off-peak) and arrives with an hour of load-in time in hand. If they’re 10am–1pm and 4pm–7pm, you’re paying for 3 hours of the crew waiting between load-out and load-in. Try to book them within a 30-minute overlap.
The drive: Warringah Freeway or Sydney Harbour Tunnel?
The default route is Pacific Highway → Warringah Freeway → Harbour Bridge → Western Distributor → Hickson Road. Off-peak this is 25–35 minutes for a moving truck. Peak windows change the answer:
Weekday 7am–9am southbound: Add 15–20 minutes to the Freeway and Bridge legs. Chatswood-to-Barangaroo at 8am can push 55 minutes.
Weekday 4pm–6pm northbound (return trip): Same story on the way back. If we’re doing a round-trip in a single crew day, this matters.
Weekend afternoons: Bridge is usually fine, but Hickson Road slows around 12pm–2pm because of Barangaroo pedestrian and cyclist traffic. Sunday afternoon can be slower than a weekday morning.
The Sydney Harbour Tunnel is a backup if the Bridge is jammed, but the Tunnel exit feeds into the Cahill Expressway and the eastern CBD grid — for a truck heading to Barangaroo you’d have to exit at Grosvenor and thread west, which adds 5–10 minutes. Nine times out of ten, the Bridge wins for a Chatswood → Barangaroo run.
What the move actually looks like on the day
Here’s how a typical Chatswood → Barangaroo move runs — 2-bedroom apartment, two movers, both lifts booked in overlapping windows:
9:45am: Crew arrives at Chatswood building 15 minutes before the 10am lift window. Check in with concierge, present certificate of currency, receive the service-lift key or fob. Lay floor runners in the lobby, corridor and lift.
10am–12pm: Load-out. Two movers work the apartment-to-lift-to-truck cycle. A 2-bed with lift access typically loads in 1.5–2 hours. Furniture is blanket-wrapped and strapped in the truck as it’s loaded.
12pm–12:30pm: Truck drives Chatswood → Barangaroo off-peak. Meanwhile one mover can ride ahead in a car to check in at the Barangaroo building and start the lift-side prep.
12:30pm–2:30pm: Load-in at Barangaroo. Truck reverses into the dock, crew brings the load up via the pre-booked service lift, positions furniture in the new apartment. Floor runners at both ends, blanket wrap comes off as items are placed.
2:30pm–3pm: Final walkthrough, sign-off with Barangaroo building manager, return lift keys.
Total on the clock: 4.5–5 hours at $150/hr + GST = $675–$750 + GST for a 2-bed with no complications.

Three things that push the cost up on this route
1. Chatswood lift bookings that don’t align with Barangaroo lift bookings.
If your Chatswood building only has a 3pm–6pm slot free and your Barangaroo building only has 8am–11am slots, the move splits across two days or the crew sits idle. Try to book Chatswood first (there’s usually more availability at 2 weeks notice), then match the Barangaroo window.
2. Peak-hour drives.
A load-out that finishes at 4pm and drives through afternoon peak adds an hour of paid time on the road. If we can push the drive into 10:30am or 1:30pm windows, we save you real money.
3. Barangaroo dock restrictions.
Barangaroo docks are designed for tradesmen and one truck at a time. If another move is booked in the same dock window (uncommon but possible), we may need to stage the truck at Hickson Road until the dock clears. Building managers usually flag this at booking, so it rarely surprises us.
What we bring
Every Chatswood → Barangaroo move includes:
- Floor runners at both buildings’ lobbies and corridors
- Full blanket-wrap on all timber, upholstered, leather and stone furniture
- Dollies and moving straps rated for lift dimensions
- Public liability and goods-in-transit insurance (certificate of currency provided in advance for both buildings)
- A crew in Hartmann uniform with photo ID
- Written quote before the day, hourly rate confirmed in the quote email
The verdict
Chatswood → Barangaroo is a well-behaved move if you plan the two lift windows first and the truck drive second. Both ends have modern loading infrastructure. Both ends have strict building managers. Both ends want your certificate of currency and a booked window. Do that homework, and the physical work is a 4–6 hour job for a 2-bedroom.
