Removalists in Surry Hills — Hartmann Removals

Surry Hills is terraces and warehouse conversions on narrow one-way streets. A 2-bed terrace with two movers and a truck is $750–$1,050 + GST. The Surry Hills variable isn’t the stairs — there are always stairs — it’s the Crown and Cleveland Street clearway windows, which decide when the truck can sit near your door.

Moving in Surry Hills

What Surry Hills actually involves.

Most of Surry Hills 2010 is Victorian and Edwardian terrace rows — two- and three-storey, narrow frontages, narrow internal staircases with tight landings, and a rear laneway on many blocks. Whether your place has rear-lane access or is street-only is the single biggest factor on the hours, because a rear-lane load means we don’t sit waiting for the clearway to lift.

Crown Street and Cleveland Street are the main north-south and east-west arterials, both with bus routes and clearway hours in the AM and PM peaks (no stopping weekday mornings and evenings). For a move on or near Crown, mid-morning through early afternoon is the kindest window, and from there the side streets like Foveaux, Campbell and Devonshire are usually workable with care.

Surry Hills also has a cluster of warehouse-conversion apartments — old industrial buildings turned residential with high ceilings, oversized layouts and sometimes a freight lift. The Wentworth Avenue strip down the western edge holds the largest of these conversions; the original Reader’s Digest building and Allianz/Foley’s Lane blocks are typical examples. Freight-lift bookings need a week or two of notice with building management.

Off the arterials, Bourke and Riley Streets run parallel north-south behind Crown and are quieter — rear-loading is viable on much of Bourke between Cleveland and Foveaux. Reservoir, Mary, Ann and Holt Streets in the south of 2010 are the densest terrace blocks: narrow frontages, sometimes only single-car width clearance for a 6-tonne truck. The Belvoir Street Theatre precinct, the Brett Whiteley Studio off Raper Street, and the Surry Hills Library and Community Centre on Crown anchor the cultural-strip half of the suburb; the Devonshire Street tunnel and Central Station edge anchor the commuter half.

Before you book

What to tell us when you call.

The quicker we know these, the tighter the hours range on your quote.

01

Tell us whether you have rear-lane access

A rear-lane load-in is a different job than a street-only one. Lanes are narrower but trucks can often reverse in and park continuously, which saves hours of waiting out the clearway on Crown or Cleveland.

02

Confirm clearway hours at both ends

Crown, Cleveland, Flinders and Oxford Street edges all have weekday peak clearways. We aim for mid-morning slots (roughly 10am–2pm) when trucks can sit kerbside on the arterials.

03

Large items + narrow terrace stairs

Surry Hills terrace staircases are tight. L-couches, king pedestal beds and large wardrobes sometimes need to come apart or go up a rear balcony. Flag these early so we bring the right straps and tools.

04

Warehouse conversion? Book the freight lift

Conversion buildings with a freight lift want 1–2 weeks’ notice for a booking and will usually ask for a certificate of currency. Send us the building and date and we’ll get the paperwork over.

Common moves

Where Surry Hills is moving.

The four lanes we run most often from Surry Hills. Same hourly rate, same inclusions, same insurance cover on every run.

01

Surry Hills Sydney CBD

via Elizabeth Street · ~5–15 min

The shortest lane we run — Surry Hills share houses and 1-beds moving into CBD towers. Short drive, but most CBD destinations need a service-lift booking, so the truck time is planned around the dock window.

02

Surry Hills Newtown

via City Road · ~15–20 min

Classic Inner-East-to-Inner-West move. Terrace out, terrace in. Rear-lane access at both ends saves real hours — we ask about it on the quote call.

03

Surry Hills Paddington

via Oxford Street · ~10–15 min

Short cross-suburb run along the Oxford Street spine. Watch the weekday AM and PM peak clearways — we plan kerbside staging around the mid-morning window.

04

Surry Hills Bondi

via Oxford Street / Bondi Road · ~20–35 min

Popular life-stage lane — renters moving from Surry Hills flats to Bondi walk-ups. Early-morning starts are meaningfully faster outside summer.

Surry Hills FAQ

Surry Hills removalist FAQs.

How much does a Surry Hills removalist cost in 2026?

A 1-bed Surry Hills flat or terrace with two movers is $450–$750 + GST based on our $150/hr rate and 3–5 typical hours. A 2-bed terrace is $750–$1,050. The rear-lane versus street-only question shifts the top end of the range more than floor count does.

Do you know the Crown and Cleveland Street clearway times?

Crown and Cleveland both carry bus routes with weekday AM and PM peak clearways (broadly 6–10am and 3–7pm, with local variations). We plan around them — mid-morning through early afternoon is the working window for kerbside truck positioning on those streets.

Can you do a Surry Hills terrace with a narrow staircase?

Yes — it’s the most common move in 2010. Narrow staircases with 180-degree turns are standard, and we bring shoulder straps, furniture pads and bed-frame tools. L-couches sometimes need a quick leg-off. Third-floor walk-ups add roughly an hour to the typical 2-bed time.

Do you handle warehouse conversion freight-lift bookings?

Yes. If you tell us the building and your move date, we’ll liaise with building management on the freight-lift booking and send through the certificate of currency they’ll ask for. One to two weeks ahead is the usual notice period.

Do you do same-day moves in Surry Hills?

Yes, subject to availability — the tighter the lead time, the less flexibility on preferred start time. Call before 10am for the best chance at a same-day slot. Surry Hills moves benefit most from a same-day run for studios and 1-beds where timing is flexible.

Are you insured for Surry Hills heritage terraces?

Public liability and goods-in-transit insurance on every job. Heritage-listing status doesn’t affect moves — it applies to building works, not a removal — but the narrow stairs and tight turns are where we take extra care. Floor protection and blanket wrap are standard.

Which parts of Surry Hills do you cover?

All of postcode 2010, from the Central Station edge through to Taylor Square, Moore Park Road and the Paddington border. Same rates apply anywhere in the postcode.

Which removalist is best for Surry Hills (sometimes spelled Surrey Hills)?

Most Sydney removalists who work the inner-east handle Surry Hills (postcode 2010, occasionally misspelled "Surrey Hills") — Hartmann, Kent, Zoom, Two Men and a Truck and Men That Move are the regulars. The right pick depends on whether your move is a standard 2-bed terrace ($750–$1,050 + GST with two movers) or something more specialised — heritage piece, warehouse-conversion freight lift, share-house multi-pickup. Get two written quotes with hourly rate and estimated hours, compare both, and ask each what happens if the job runs over the estimate.

How does Surry Hills compare to Paddington and Bondi for moving cost?

Surry Hills sits in the middle of the inner-east price band. Paddington (postcode 2021) is similar terrace stock and similar pricing — $750–$1,050 + GST for a 2-bed — but with tighter street parking and more frequent council permit needs. Bondi (postcode 2026) is more variable because of the walk-up apartment density: a 2-bed typically runs $600–$900 + GST in a lift building, $750–$1,200 + GST in a third-floor walk-up. Surry Hills wins on rear-laneway access where it exists; Bondi wins on lift availability.
