If you’re a student in Sydney flying home or heading interstate for the summer, you face the same annual question: what do you do with a whole room of furniture for three or four months? Storing it over the break is almost always cheaper than paying rent on an empty share-house room — and with a collect-store-redeliver service, you don’t lift a box or hire a ute.
Here’s how it works and what it costs.
What student storage over the break actually is
The service has three steps, and your things get handled twice instead of four times:
- Before you fly, a crew collects your things from your address and loads them straight into a sealed storage pod. No trip to a self-storage yard, no ute hire.
- While you’re away, the sealed pod sits in a secure indoor warehouse under CCTV. You’re billed by the calendar month.
- When you’re back, you give two business days’ notice and the crew redelivers to your new or same address.
That’s the difference between a storage pod and a self-storage unit: with a unit, you cart everything there yourself and back again. With a pod, the removalist does both ends.
What it costs
A 10 cubic metre pod — roughly a studio or one-bedroom’s worth of furniture and 20–30 boxes — is $199/month + GST. On a two-month minimum booking (which suits a break), the first month is 25% off.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Pod, month one (25% off) | $149.25 + GST |
| Pod, each month after | $199/month + GST |
| Collection (crew) | From $150/hr + GST, 3-hour minimum |
| Redelivery (crew) | From $150/hr + GST, 3-hour minimum |
| Call-out fee | Distance-based, confirmed on your quote |
So a three-month summer break storing one pod works out to roughly $149.25 + $199 + $199 = $547.25 + GST in storage, plus the two short crew jobs to collect and redeliver. Every figure is on the quote before you book — there’s no line that lands for the first time on the invoice.
Why it beats keeping the room
Say your share-house room costs $350 a week. Over a 14-week summer break, that’s about $4,900 in rent for a room you’re not sleeping in. Storing the same room’s contents in a pod for that period is a few hundred dollars in storage plus the two crew jobs — a fraction of the rent, and you’re free to give notice and find a better room for when you return.
For international students the maths is even clearer: there’s no reason to hold a Sydney lease while you’re on the other side of the world for the summer.
What fits in one pod
A 10m³ pod holds about a room: a bed, a desk, drawers, a small lounge or armchair, and 20–30 boxes. Most students storing a single room fit in one pod comfortably. If you’ve only got a few boxes and a mattress, a pod may be more space than you need — a small self-storage unit can work out cheaper, and a good removalist will tell you so rather than sell you a pod you don’t need.
Book before exams, not after
The single busiest week for student storage is the last week of semester, when every lease ends and everyone flies out at once. Lock your collection date in as soon as you have your flight — two to three weeks out is comfortable. Leave it to the last day and you’re competing with every other student on your block for the same crew on the same afternoon.
Hartmann Removals runs student storage across Sydney’s university suburbs — UNSW, USYD, UTS and Macquarie — with collection before you fly, secure warehouse storage, and redelivery when you’re back. First month 25% off on a two-month minimum. See the full detail on the student storage page, or get a quote and we’ll price collection, storage and redelivery in one line.
